Oak Plywood Explained

Oak veneered plywood is manufactured in the UK, usually made to order due to the range of thicknesses, panel sizes, veneer slicing options and face grades. We offer it with a birch plywood, poplar plywood or pine plywood core, as well as MDF and chipboard cores.

Solid oak plywood (oak throughout) is not commercially manufactured: the cost of the material would be prohibitive and the availability of logs is not sufficient to make it commercially viable. When people refer to oak plywood, they mean oak veneered or oak faced plywood. The two terms describe the same panel, and it is what we supply.

How Oak Veneered Panels Are Made

Lengths of thinly cut oak are edge bonded into "layons": sheets of veneer strips slightly larger than the intended core panel. These are glued and pressed onto both sides of the core. Where only one side will be visible, a lower grade veneer known as a balancer is used on the reverse to equalise tension in the panel.

The plywood edges can be colour stained to more closely match the faces. Birch and poplar cores are slightly lighter than oak and accept a stain well. Alternatively, edges can be lipped with strips of real timber to hide the core, giving a solid-looking panel.

Types of Oak Veneer

Crown cut produces peaks of grain known as "cathedrals", while quarter cut gives straighter, more uniform grain. Timber origin is the next choice: European oak, or American oak (White or Red). Rustic, character, knotty, pippy, cracked and mismatched oak can be specified where a more natural look is required, with dark knots intentionally selected. Oak veneer can also be smoked ("fumed") for a darker colour, or dyed for grey and black shades. Other variations include rough cut, rough sawn, rift cut and burrs.
